Werzalit Canteen Table

The Werzalit canteen table is designed for a space that serves three meals a day and is wiped down with a wet cloth after every one. Produced by Sırasan under code YM 01, this table combines an 80×140 cm Werzalit top with a box profile frame to offer a durability-first solution for the hardest-wearing point in school, institutional and factory canteens.

Why a Werzalit top?

A canteen table top meets a different load from every other surface in a school: hot plates, spilled soup, acidic liquids such as vinegar and lemon, wet cleaning several times a day, and detergent. An ordinary melamine-faced chipboard takes on water at the edges through that cycle; within a few years the edge banding lifts and the panel swells.

Werzalit solves this structurally. It is a homogeneous material produced by pressing wood fibre with resin under high pressure; it is not a facing — the body itself is moisture resistant. Its edges are machined as a rounded profile with no separate band applied, so there is no edge to lift. In a canteen this is precisely the detail that determines the life of a table.

Werzalit also leaves no mark on hot-plate contact and does not stain. The surface has a wood texture, giving a warmer look than metal or laminate tables and one better suited to a space where people eat.

Box profile frame

The frame is made from box profile steel. Box profile resists torsion better than tube profile, preventing wobble when someone leans on the long edge of the table. On a top as long as 140 cm this difference is felt directly.

The profile surface is finished with electrostatic powder coating. Because the coating is oven-cured and bonded to the metal, it does not blister in the humid canteen environment, does not dull on contact with cleaning chemicals and does not flake on impact. Colour is chosen from the RAL chart; the feet carry impact-absorbing plastic glides that do not scratch the floor.

80×140 cm and seating capacity

An 80×140 cm top suits six people in a facing layout: three along each long edge. That gives roughly 45–47 cm of width per person, a comfortable dimension for canteens serving with trays. Where service is plate-based without trays, the same table can take up to eight.

The 80 cm depth matters so that the trays of two people sitting opposite one another do not clash in the middle. On narrower tops, facing trays touch and no room is left in the centre for shared items such as water jugs or bread baskets.

Canteen layout

In canteen planning, aisle distances matter as much as table size. At least 100–120 cm should be left between rows of tables so that someone can pass behind a seated person carrying a tray. The main aisle running from the service counter to the tables should be wider still, to prevent congestion at the start of a sitting.

Capacity calculation determines table numbers directly. A canteen usually runs in two or three service rounds; we divide the total student number by the number of rounds to find how many must be seated at once, and from that the number of tables. Chairs and complementary products

A canteen table only makes sense with the right chair. Chairs here must also be moisture resistant; Werzalit panel or moulded plastic student chairs are the most practical options for canteen use. Upholstered chairs are not recommended for this space because of food staining and moisture.
