Modena Single Student Desk

The Modena single student desk is a classic school desk designed for classrooms where every pupil should have their own workspace. With a choice of 45×63 cm Werzalit or 45×65 cm CDF top, a full-width wire book rack beneath the desktop and a curved C-leg frame, it works at every level from primary to high school. Manufactured by Sırasan under the code SR 11-12, Modena is one of the most widely chosen single-desk configurations thanks to its clean lines and its ability to carry two different tops on one frame. Which classroom is it right for?

A single-desk layout lets each pupil work within clearly defined boundaries. That makes the teacher’s job easier during tests and assessments in particular: physical distance between pupils is maintained and distraction drops. Because Modena desks are moved individually, the room can be switched from the classic row layout to a U-shape, an island layout or a group-work arrangement within minutes. Double desks save floor area in crowded rooms, but if flexibility and individual work are your priority, the single desk is the better investment. In tutoring centres, study halls and rooms used for examinations, the single desk has become close to standard.

Werzalit and CDF tops: two surfaces, one frame

Modena’s most distinctive feature is that it offers two different top characters on the same frame. The Werzalit top measures 45×63 cm: a wood-textured, warm-looking surface with rounded edges. It is a material with a long history in school furniture, accustomed to impact and daily wear, and the natural choice for schools that want to preserve a classic classroom atmosphere.

The CDF (compact) top measures 45×65 cm and comes with its characteristic black core edge. Pressed under high pressure, this structure is more resistant to moisture and scratching; it comes to the fore where wet cleaning is frequent, in classrooms adjacent to a laboratory or workshop, and in institutions with a high turnover rate. Visually it also leaves a more contemporary, sharper-edged impression. The difference between the two options is only at the surface — frame, book rack and modesty panel stay the same, so using both top types in one school is entirely possible.

The wire book rack fitted beneath the top runs the full width of the desk. Notebooks, books and bag contents sit there without occupying the desktop, so the pupil’s working surface stays clear all day. The open wire construction makes the contents visible — notebooks left behind at the end of a lesson are noticed easily, and no area escapes attention during cleaning.

The modesty panel at the front is screw-mounted. Its function is twofold: it closes off the seating position, giving the classroom a tidier and more composed appearance, and at the same time it adds lateral rigidity to the frame. Because the panel colour can be chosen together with the frame, the desk fits the school’s visual language.

Powder-coated frame and RAL colour choice

Modena’s frame is a C-leg (cantilever) form built from curved profiles. Because this form leaves no vertical leg at the front of the desk, it widens the pupil’s leg room and makes sweeping under the desk noticeably easier. Metal surfaces are finished with electrostatic powder coating; cured in an oven, this coating forms a single-piece surface that resists scratching and moisture better than liquid paint.

Frame and modesty panel colours are chosen from the RAL chart. That means the desk can be produced to match the school’s corporate colour: the same frame looks right in a pistachio-green primary classroom and in a grey-toned high school room alike. The shock-absorbing plastic glides at the leg ends protect the floor and reduce the scraping noise made when a desk is pulled.

Height steps from primary to high school

The Modena single desk is produced in three separate height steps — primary, middle and high school. The correct height lets the pupil sit with feet flat on the floor and elbows level with the top; the wrong height leads over time to poor posture and to the physical fatigue that makes concentrating on the lesson harder. At the ordering stage we review the age distribution of your classes together and work out how many of each step are needed. Ordering different steps for different floors of the same school is a common and recommended approach.

A practical method for choosing steps is to measure the shortest and tallest pupil in the room and look at the spread between them. Where the height difference within one class is pronounced, mixing two steps usually gives a better result than insisting on one; because the desks share the same frame, visual consistency is not broken.
