Elips Double Student Desk

The Elips double student desk is a unit in which the desk and the seating for two pupils are combined on a single frame. The chairs are not separate pieces: two separate seats and two separate backrests are attached to the oval profile skeleton. Produced under the code SR 43, this unit comes with a 45×110 cm Werzalit top and Werzalit, PPC or upholstered options for the seat and backrest.

Two separate seats, one frame

A combined structure does not mean two pupils share a common bench. Each pupil has their own seat and their own backrest, with a physical separation between them. That removes the boundary ambiguity a long bench surface creates — pupils cannot slide towards one another and the seating area does not narrow during the day. The shared frame, meanwhile, lets the unit move as a single item: when the classroom layout is changed, one object is carried rather than four.

The order that a fixed distance brings

The distance between desk and seat is fixed in production. In separate-chair arrangements that distance changes throughout the day; the chair slides and the pupil either presses their chest against the top or leans forward to write. A fixed distance preserves a balanced posture by itself, once the correct height step is chosen. The same fixity makes a difference to how the room looks, too: there is no need to gather chairs at the end of a lesson, and the room is found in the morning as it was left. On the other hand the unit’s total depth differs from separate-chair arrangements, and the layout plan has to be made to that dimension.

Seat and backrest material

The seating surface is chosen from three materials. Werzalit is produced from the same material as the top; it is hard, durable and the easiest to clean. PPC plastic offers a more flexible surface and the widest colour range. The upholstered option gives the highest comfort with fabric over foam. On double units the material decision matters more than on singles, because although the two pupils sitting on the same frame do not share a surface, they generate the same rate of wear; under intensive use Werzalit and PPC last longer.

The colour decision is also more visible on double units than on singles. Because the top, two seats, two backrests and the modesty panel are gathered on one surface, the tone chosen sets the room’s general atmosphere. Light, neutral tones enlarge the space, while saturated colours add liveliness for younger age groups but can create visual fatigue in a crowded room. In practice the most balanced result comes from contrasting builds that keep the frame dark and the surfaces light, or the reverse; single-colour units give a plain, corporate appearance.

Oval profile skeleton and colour consistency

Oval-section profile is used throughout the frame. An oval section leaves no corner on the surfaces that are touched while offering a wider section on the load axis — important on combined units, because the skeleton carries both the top and the weight of two pupils. The frame meets the floor on a skid foot with wide plastic glides at the ends. Metal surfaces are finished in electrostatic powder coating; when the top, seats, backrests and modesty panel are chosen from the same colour family, the unit reads as a single piece of furniture.

On combined units the load the skeleton carries is structurally different from desk-only models. In separate-chair arrangements the chair carries the pupil’s weight and the desk carries only the top; here a single skeleton takes on both, and the load concentrates at the points where the seats attach. The oval profile giving a wide section on the load axis is therefore not a matter of preference but a requirement of the design. For the same reason the floor-contact surface of the skid foot has been widened.

Which classrooms is it right for?

Combined units work most efficiently where the layout stays fixed: classic classrooms, study halls, examination centres and tutoring rooms. In rooms that join tables into island layouts and move often into group work, models with separate chairs are more flexible. The unit is produced in three height steps — primary, middle and high school; because seat height is fixed together with the top on a combined structure, step selection is a more critical decision here.

It also has a feature worth noting for examination layouts. Because the seating position is fixed on combined units, the distance between pupils does not change during the day; since chairs cannot be moved closer together, examination security is established once through the layout plan and stays that way. In a room arranged in one direction and in line, that makes the invigilator’s job noticeably easier. Leaving one seat empty during examinations is common practice on double units; we recommend factoring the examination scenario into your quantity planning as well.

Layout plan, installation and quotation

We particularly recommend not skipping the layout work on this unit: because the total depth differs from separate-chair arrangements, the number of desks that fit in the room changes and the gaps between rows have to be planned accordingly.
